CBD and Veterans
In the United States alone, there are over nineteen million veterans. Because of the nature of war, many of these individuals come back to civilian life struggling with their mental state. The even more unfortunate truth is that less than half of these former soldiers get the help they need for their struggles; be they physical or mental. Some avoid treatment because of the stigma of weakness associated with therapy, while others simply don’t realize that there is help to be had in the first place. In many of these situations, people turn to self medication through alcohol or opiates which can be terribly damaging in the long term if they form an addiction. Thankfully, with the recent changes in the law, veterans are gaining access to CBD and its incredible effects to improve their lives.
CBD can help veterans in two specific ways. The first is in regards to past injuries they may have suffered during their time in combat. Injuries they received may have healed, but more often than not the serious types of injuries that are common in war leave the recipient with a chronic pain that needs some kind of relief. As previously mentioned, many veterans seek help through opiates. Opiates are powerful pain medications that block the nerve’s ability to send pain signals. This is very useful, but highly addictive and potentially damaging to the liver and kidneys. For this reason, CBD is a fantastic alternative. CBD helps veterans dealing with chronic pain through its ability to reduce inflammation. Old injuries often leave scar tissue behind which can become inflamed easily. By reducing this inflammation, the pain recedes and life can become much easier with zero risk of addiction or overdose.
The other, more common way, that CBD can help veterans is helping them deal with PTSD and the mental trauma many come back from war dealing with. The most common symptoms of PTSD include insomnia, anxiety, and depression. CBD can help ease these symptoms in a number of ways. First, in terms of assisting in having more restful sleep, CBD is a fantastic muscle relaxant. By reducing tension throughout the body, it is easier to find sleep and ignore past traumas and memories that can trigger attacks of any sort. Handling symptoms of depression and anxiety are a bit more difficult, but just as possible with the help of CBD. CBD helps regulate the neurotransmitters within the brain and nervous system. Depression and anxiety are often rooted in an imbalance of these neurotransmitters so getting them back to a baseline is often the first step to helping improve the state of the mind.
While CBD couldn’t be classified as a proper treatment for PTSD, it is most certainly enormously beneficial. Finding relief from the more serious symptoms is the first step toward healing and that’s all a great deal of former soldiers are looking for. It will likely take more treatment at a professional level to really gain meaningful progress, but CBD is a great place to start.
