CBD and Arthritis
For many, traditional medicine isn’t enough when it comes to treating chronic pain and arthritis. It can be frustrating to constantly be thinking about joint pain when trying to live normally. Thankfully, more and more research is coming out that shows how CBD could be an excellent alternative to traditional medicine for treating arthritis. For those looking for another relief or those looking to move away from powerful pharmaceuticals, CBD could be the option.
First, it is important to understand what arthritis truly is. Many believe it is simply something that happens as one gets older. That isn’t necessarily true. Arthritis can affect people of any age. When broken down, arthritis isn’t really even one disease. Broadly, arthritis is described as the inflammation of joints which leads to pain. This can be caused by a multitude of other conditions including osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and others. The symptoms can be caused by anything from the natural breakdown of joints over time to a more specific condition like rheumatoid arthritis, which is pain derived from the immune system causing the swelling of the joints.
CBD might be a near perfect remedy to many of these symptoms. As CBD interacts with the body through the endocannabinoid system, it activates a receptor known as CB2, which signals the brain to reduce swelling. When the swelling goes down, the pain reduces. Along with alleviating the symptoms, CBD can act as a good general pain reliever. Because of this, many people who used to rely on powerful painkillers to go about their everyday lives have been able to stop taking those powerful pharmaceuticals altogether.
The chronic pain of arthritis can also affect the body in a less commonly known way. When someone is dealing with chronic pain, the brain often reacts with feelings of depression and hopelessness as it feels like the pain will never stop. When the brain constantly thinks a particular way, the neural pathways can conform to that and it becomes, unfortunately, easier to fall into a depressed state. CBD can aid with this as well as one of the ways CBD interacts with the brain is by promoting actions known as neurogenesis and neuroplasticity. These two actions refer to the creation of new brain cells, which allow the brain to, in a sense, take new pathways and think differently. Researchers believe that this malleability can help those suffering from arthritis, or any chronic pain, to lessen their struggle.
While much more research is needed to definitively confirm the benefits of CBD for chronic pain and arthritis, the preliminary results and testimony from those who have used it are extremely positive. With CBD’s proven effects of decreasing inflammation of joins and general pain relief, it certainly points towards being a logical answer to the condition that has plagued people for a very long time.
